E-mail is an electronic version of sending a letter, onlywith distinct advantages. You can send it at any time of the day without living your home or office and it will arrive in the receiver’s e-mailbox minutes later, even if the receiver lives on the other side of the world. (Mind you, the person still has to check their mailbox to get the message.)
To use e-mail, you need a software called MAIL CLIENT. Popular e-mail clients
for PC are Eudora and Pegasus mail, personally we prefer the Netscape Mail
Messanger built in Netscape Communicator 4.04 browser software. For Mac
we suggest the same (Netscape Communicator) but the most popular e-mail
clients are Eudora and Claris Emailer.
UNDERSTANDING E-MAIL
An
e-mail address is usually your user name, followed by an @ (at), followed
by the domain name of the Internet Service Provider you are connected through.
Example :
Our Internet user name is thelastcall and we are connected
through the Fiji Internet Service so our e-mail address is : thelastcall@is.com.fj
(is.com.fj is the Fiji Internet Service domain name)
SENDING AND RECEIVING E-MAIL
First at all if you don’t know exactly how to configure your e-mail client software to enable it to send and receive is better if you ask to someone (like Ivan).
When you want to write a mail to your cousin in Zambia all you have to do is write the message on the e-mail client software, add your cousin e-mail address and click on the send button… after about 1 to 3 minutes your cousin can check his e-mailbox and find your letter there. Just for informations a Fax of 1 page only (full text) from Fiji to Italy costs 150 F$, via e-mail it costs less than one dollar !!!!!!
If you want to receive your e-mail, just get connected on the Internet,
open your E-mailer (that’s how we call the e-mail clients), and
click on the “get messages” , now off your connections and read your new
messages in peace.
E-M@ni@
Starting from the concept that every e-mail message is a file (a small
file), you can easily send other files via e-mail like : Pictures, Excel
worksheets, Databases, etc.
Remember that if your modem is a 33.3 Kbs and you want
to send 5Mb of file via e-mail you can wait around 1 to 2 hours. (5Mb of
text means 1000 times this page).
You can also send the same message to 50 persons at once,
but remember, that’s junk mail !
Ivanet’s guide to Free E mails
On the previous parts we said that to have an e-mail address you must have your own Internet connection, but is not completely true. In fact you can have your e-mail address even if you don’t have your own computer ! Many Internet organizations and Web developers made lots of “web based“ FREE e-mail services, where you can have (FREE) an e-mail address for all your life and usable all over the world.
Why is good to have a free e-mail address
for whom already has an official one
First because in case you are in Australia and you
want to read your “Fijian” mail you have only 2 possibility :
- or you reconfigure the browser on the computer in Australia
to read your
mail in Fiji (but you must know how)
- or you sign up to one of the 300 FREE E-Mail services
where you can receive
your Fiji mail too.
Why is good to have a free e-mail address
for whom doesn’t have a computer
Is not only good but is great, because every FREE e-mail address can be opened from any computer connected to the WEB (from every places in the world) and allow you to send and receive your mail. Since January 1998 more than 500 people (turists with no computer in Fiji) sent mail to other friends from our computer in THE LAST CALL.
How it works and why is FREE
All you have to do is load one of the 300 Free E-mail Web sites, fill in the sign up form, invent an e-mail address, get your login name and password, and it’s done !!!
Is a free service just because on all the pages of the FREE E-mail Web sites you will find many advertisements (so they pay for you) but they don’t disturb your “mailing operations” at all.
A personal example will explain everything :
Mr Indiana Pipps (from Amazonia) has to come in Fiji
for a holiday, but he cannot drop his computer with him. That’s a big problem
because, Mr Indiana’s business is to be an Explorator and he must receive
his e-mail every day.
So, he connect to the Internet, load (for example) Hotmail and free at all he get a free e-mail address. He knows that once in Fiji he can check his mail from any computer (connected to the net) he can find, simply loading the Hotmail page and insert his name and pass word like (maybe) this :
Have a try and get your free e-mail address on the addresses below.
